The Full Story
The Victorian Detective emerged from what was, internally, referred to for years afterward as "the mystery box incident." A shipment of design reference materials, ordered by a since-departed product manager for a completely unrelated project, arrived containing, inexplicably, three vintage deerstalker hats, a box of magnifying glasses, and no explanation whatsoever as to why. The product manager in question left the company two weeks later for unrelated reasons, and nobody has ever been able to determine what the original hats were actually for.
Rather than let the mystery box go to waste, the design team, in a fit of what can only be described as thematic appropriateness, decided to solve the mystery of the mystery box by building a detective duck, which felt like the only correct response. The magnifying glass held in one wing is sized to a genuine scale replica of a Victorian-era investigator's tool, cross-referenced against period photography by a designer who took the project far more seriously than a rubber duck accessory strictly required.
The tweed pattern printed on the coat is, we're told, technically a herringbone weave rather than a true tweed, a distinction that means nothing to most customers and a great deal to the one textile-obsessed member of our design team who insists on bringing it up at every product review meeting to this day.

The cape and hat combination is genuinely well tailored for something this small. Sits nicely on a bookshelf next to my actual detective novel collection.

The tweed pattern print is lighter on mine than in the photos, looks almost solid brown from a few feet away. Still nice, just less detailed than expected.
I have given this far more thought than is reasonable, but the proportions of the magnifying glass to the duck's wing genuinely respect classic detective iconography without looking cartoonish, a balance most novelty products completely fail to strike. This is, unquestionably, the most tastefully designed duck in my collection, and I have opinions about the other twelve.
Arrived with a small loose thread where a button should apparently be attached, looked incomplete. Not a huge deal but worth flagging for quality control.
