The Full Story
The Frankenstein Duck holds a special place in company history as the first design ever produced specifically for a seasonal release, launched for Halloween in the early 90s after a genuinely chaotic scramble that has been retold, with steadily increasing embellishment, at nearly every company Halloween party since.
According to the most consistent version of events, a wholesale buyer called with an unexpected, fairly large order request for "something spooky" with less than three weeks' notice before the holiday. Rather than turn down the order, the team pulled an assortment of leftover green tinted vinyl from an unrelated cancelled project, hand-painted stitching and bolt details directly onto existing duck molds overnight, and shipped the order just in time. The design was never meant to become permanent. It sold out in four days flat, and the rest, as they say, is a somewhat improvised legacy.
The pale green shade is, we understand, technically the exact same base tint as a duck design that was scrapped before ever reaching customers, something involving a swamp theme that never made it past internal review for reasons nobody currently at the company can fully recall. We like to think the color found its true purpose eventually.
Customer Reviews
Perfect size for a mantelpiece display, the stitching detail reads really well even from across the room.
Not scary at all really, more cute-spooky, which was exactly what we wanted for a kids' Halloween party.
Bought a few of these for party decor, worked great, no complaints.
Love the sculpt but only really want to display it in October. A version without the green tint for year round display would be a fun addition to the line.
The neck bolt detail is a bit flat and plasticky looking in person compared to photos. Not bad, just not quite as premium feeling as some of the other ducks I've bought from this company.
Didn't expect to read about a scrapped swamp-themed duck project while shopping for Halloween decorations but here we are. This company's product pages are doing more emotional labor than most greeting cards. Great duck. Weirdly great writing team.
