The Full Story
The Hipster was designed, with a fairly self-aware wink, directly in response to the neighborhood the original warehouse relocated to in the mid 2010s, a neighborhood that underwent the kind of rapid transformation involving, in quick succession, an artisanal coffee shop, a vintage bicycle repair collective, and no fewer than three separate small-batch pickle companies within a six block radius, one of whom, we understand, still occasionally trades product with our own gift shop.
The tiny painted can on the wing, deliberately unbranded to avoid any trademark issues, was almost left out entirely after one reviewer on the design team called it "too easy a joke," a critique the rest of the team overruled on the grounds that sometimes the easy joke is simply the correct one. The beanie's pom-pom went through more revision rounds than the rest of the design combined, with early versions deemed either "too small to notice" or "aggressively large," a spectrum the team navigated with more seriousness than the stakes probably warranted.
This design continues to sell disproportionately well in exactly the kind of neighborhoods it was designed to gently poke fun at, a fact the marketing team finds endlessly, quietly delightful.
Customer Reviews
The mustache and glasses combo had me laughing the second I opened the box. Great quality too, not just a gag gift, genuinely well made.
Bought for a friend who fits this description a little too well, he took it well, mostly.
Everyone at the party wanted one after seeing it.
Cute idea but felt slightly mean-spirited as a gift, the recipient wasn't thrilled being handed a duck that was, essentially, a caricature of himself. Product quality is fine, just consider your audience before gifting.
I have a coworker who owns this exact beanie color and I am now legally obligated to buy this for his desk. The detail work on the glasses print is sharp and well placed too, genuinely nice looking duck under the joke.
The little pom-pom on top came loose after about two weeks of normal shelf display, not heavy handling. Minor issue but worth a mention.
