The Full Story
The Surfer was designed following a company-sponsored trip to a coastal sales conference that several employees, by their own admission, treated with considerably more enthusiasm for the beach portion of the itinerary than the actual conference sessions. Attendance at the second-day keynote was, according to the conference organizer's follow-up email, "notably lower than registered," a fact that did not go unnoticed by leadership at the time, though no formal consequences were ever recorded, mostly because it turned out several members of leadership had also skipped the keynote.
The teal color was chosen after extensive, and we mean extensive, internal debate over whether a duck should ever be a color other than yellow at all, a philosophical question the design department revisits with real seriousness every time a new non-yellow duck is proposed. The Surfer, along with the Wizard, remains one of the department's proudest wins in this ongoing, entirely self-imposed battle.
The floral pattern on the board shorts is redesigned every few production runs purely because the design team enjoys it, meaning slightly different floral patterns exist across different manufacturing batches over the years, a detail collectors have started to notice and, in a few cases, specifically hunt for.
Customer Reviews
Teal is a lovely shade, really stands out from the rest of my mostly-yellow duck shelf. Board shorts print is fun too.
Bought as a beach house housewarming gift, went over really well.
Perfect little souvenir-style item.
Arrived with the little surfboard detached from the duck's wing, some kind of weak point in the mold I'm guessing. Was able to glue it back but wasn't thrilled to have to do that on arrival.
Didn't realize until reading this page that the board shorts pattern changes between batches, now I'm curious what 'version' mine is. This is a genuinely unnecessary but delightful thing to now care about.
I don't know, I guess I wanted more attitude from a surfer duck. This one just looks calm and pleasant. Not really a flaw, just not what I personally pictured. Still a fine product.
